INTRODUCED ANIMAL CONTROL

New Zealand developed without any predatory mammals, such as cats, possums, stoats, weasels and rats, and so in areas where they are present and we want vulnerable species such as lizards and bats to increase, they must be controlled.

The first step in many instances is to find out what sort of density the introduced animal that is to be controlled is in the area.  This is done by using tracking tunnels or sometimes night time spotlighting.

Control is usually done using integrated methods of trapping and poisoning, or shooting.
